Aix En Provence - Summer in the City

Aix-en-Provence is a classy city in the south east region of France called Provence. The city's main claim to fame is that it was home to the famous artist, Cezanne. Today there are three universities and several french language schools here, which gives Aix a large student presence. It has also increased in popularity with the arrival of the TGV high speed intercity train linking it with northern cities.

Aix-en-Provence has always been a rich and expensive city. It has quaint narrow streets which are mostly traffic free, making it a delightful place to explore and shop.

Getting Around Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-Provence is quite compact and can be walked in 15 minutes from one side to the other, but it is better to go at a slower pace, absorbing the 17th century architecture, historic hotels and tree-lined plazas. Buses serve the local area and transport visitors and locals to the outlying Carrefour Les Milles shopping center.

Perhaps the best and most Gallic way to explore the area is by bicycle. These can be hired locally to explore the outlying streets where it is a little quieter and less crowded.

Sights in Aix-en-Provence
One of the main features of Aix-en-Provence is the moss-covered fountain on the Cours Mirabeau. This is the largest of several fountains which decorate the city and its source of water is the hot spring beneath. The architecture is the main attraction to this lovely city. Bell towers and intricate doorways can be stumbled upon as you explore at will. Interestingly, the bell towers in this region are constructed of wrought iron rather than stone, to allow the gusty winds of the Mistral to blow through them. Solid stone towers would never withstand the force of these winds.

The local markets are an integral part of french life. In Aix-en-Provence there are daily markets but the Saturday market is really worth turning out for. The main food market featuring locally made cheese, pies, and freshly grown produce is at Place Richelme. The colorful flower market is held at the Place de l'Hotel de Ville and is a fantastic display of horticulture.

Things to do in and around Aix-en-Provence
St Victoire is just ten minutes by bus from the center of Aix-en-Provence. Take a picnic and enjoy the fresh country air or do a nature walk in the area. Your can climb the local mountain from here which has a monastery at the top. It is possible to camp out overnight, but collect some firewood to make a cozy campfire.

One final experience to enjoy in Aix-en-Provence is dining out. There are a surprising number of good restaurants offering an authentic french atmosphere and delicious cuisine. Chez Charlotte is where the locals eat as it serves simple french food at reasonable prices in an friendly atmosphere. For the best pizza in town try Pizza Capri at the top of Cours Mirabeau. Le Clos de la Violette is an exclusive Michelin starred restaurant or enjoy a typical french fondue at the Maison des Fondues. Eating Provencal is part of the pleasure of visiting this delightful town, so try something different and enjoy!
